The Ultimate Vegan Mint Shake
St. Patrick’s Day was one of Alex’s favorite holidays of the year. Why? Because McDonald’s released their shamrock shake for the month of March.
When she went vegan, she said goodbye to McDonald’s and their shakes, and she created a vegan version of this ultimate comfort food.
This simple homemade milkshake recipe is made with dairy-free vanilla ice cream, plant-based milk, and mint extract.
To say it’s delicious would be an understatement.
The minty freshness, the creamy coolness, and the slight taste of vanilla is so darn good!!
Speaking of minty freshness, we recommend using pure mint extract, not peppermint, to make this.
Peppermint tastes like Christmas to us, and there’s a big difference between peppermint and mint extract.
What's the Difference Between Mint and Peppermint?
Mint is a general term that applies to all of the mint flavors from the Mentha plant family. Within the mentha family there are different variations and flavors, of mint.
Peppermint, spearmint, orange mint, and more belong to the mint family, yet all of them have distinctly different flavors.
When you think of peppermint, you probably think of those red and white peppermint candies that have a strong menthol flavor.
Then there’s spearmint, which may remind you of your favorite chewing gum. Both are minty fresh but taste totally different.
Mint extract is unique because it combines the flavors of spearmint and peppermint.
The bold combination tames the sharp menthol flavor of peppermint and gives our shamrock shake its own unique minty twist.
How to Make a Homemade Shamrock Shake
This simple shake is made with 4 simple ingredients and a blender.
You’ll need a pint of your favorite vegan vanilla ice cream, 2 cups of your favorite plant-based milk, some green food coloring, and pure mint extract.
Put all of the ingredients into your blender, and blend until it’s smooth and creamy.
We prefer to use natural food coloring made from plants, but feel free to use whatever you have on hand.
Additionally, you can use peppermint extract if you don’t have mint, just know that it will have a different flavor profile.
Pour into your favorite glass and top with our coconut whipped cream.
