Why This Recipe Works
Thanks to store bought vegan mayonnaise, this recipe tastes just like tartar sauce that’s made with dairy.
Additionally, you can buy or make vegan Worcestershire sauce, which is a common ingredient found in this homemade tartar sauce.
The rest of the ingredients are also vegan, so when they’re combined with the vegan mayo and Worcestershire, the sauce is exactly what you’d expect it to taste like.
It’s truly the best tartar sauce.
Ingredients & Substitutions
Vegan Mayonnaise – This is the base of your tartar sauce. Most store-bought mayo is nut-free, so it’s good for those who have allergies to nuts.
We always try to support vegan companies, so our mayo of choice is Follow Your Heart Veganaise. If you can’t find this, then try Hellman’s or Sir Kensington’s vegan mayo.
Substitute with plain vegan Greek yogurt.
Sweet Pickle Relish – This adds tanginess, and of course, sweetness to the mayo.
If you don’t like sweet relish, then feel free to use dill relish. In a pinch you can also chop up whole pickles.
Lemon Juice – The fresh lemon adds acidity and depth of flavor to the sauce.
Substitute with white wine or apple cider vinegar.
Capers – These little flower buds add a briny, salty flavor. If you don’t have capers you can substitute with green or kalamata olives.
Fresh Dill – Dill is best when it’s fresh, and it makes a big impact on the flavor of the sauce.
Substitute with dried dill if you can’t find fresh.
Vegan Worcestershire Sauce – Conventional Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies. Fortunately, Wizard’s is vegan AND gluten-free.
Substitute with tamari or soy sauce.
Dijon Mustard – Substitute with yellow mustard.
Salt and pepper to taste – Taste the sauce before adding the salt and pepper, because many of the other ingredients will add salt.
