Roasted Almond Butter with Sea Salt and Chocolate
Salted Chocolate Roasted Almond Butter
There are some things that are so stinking easy to make, yet we buy them anyway. Why? Well, because that’s even easier. But here’s the thing, nothing tastes as good as homemade. And, homemade is cheaper.
I’m not going to pretend that I’m all that, and that I make everything I eat from scratch. I have a life outside of my kitchen, and I do buy my nut butters ready-made. But you guys, I’ve yet to find a salted chocolate roasted almond butter that’s as delicious as the one I make. Truth.
There’s nothing like roasting almonds in your oven, and then grinding them up in your food processor or high powered blender until they turn into a smooth and creamy butter. Nothing!
Add cacoa or cocoa powder, sea salt, and fresh dates to sweeten the deal and that roasted almond butter is transformed into nirvana.
One of the best things about making homemade chocolate almond butter with sea salt is the fact that you can sweeten it to your liking.
Some of you may love a super sweet almond butter, and some of you may like it more savory. Personally, I like the almost bitter taste of the cacao powder to shine through, so I only added three dates. It was sweet enough without being overpowering.
This recipe only requires four simple ingredients:
Raw almonds
Cacao or cocoa powder
Dates
Sea Salt
You’ll also need a food processor, or a high powered blender like this one, or this one.
To make this super easy four ingredient salted chocolate almond butter you’ll need to roast the almonds for a few minutes, add them to your processor or blender, add the cocoa powder, dates, and sea salt, and grind the nuts for at least ten minutes or until they turn into a smooth and creamy butter.
You can spread it on toast, make a banana and chocolate almond butter sandwich, or dip apple slices in it for the most awesome and healthy snack.
If you’re struggling with school lunch ideas, this is perfect. What kid wouldn’t want a chocolate and banana sammy for lunch? And you can feel good about it because almonds are full of protein and all kinds of good things that will keep your kiddo alert and energized.
As you may have noticed, I haven’t posted a recipe for the past two Mondays. My apologies, and I’ll get back on schedule soon. It’s just that I’ve been enjoying the last few weeks of summer, and my long runs are getting longer. Today was a sixteen miler, and to be honest, the further I get into training for the Chicago Marathon, the less time I have to devote to creating recipes and photographing them. This will all change soon as I figure out how to make it all work and stop soaking in the amazing summer weather.
Notes on the Cacao Powder: You can use cacao or cocoa powder. The flavor will be the same. Cacao powder is less processed and retains more nutrients, but cocoa powder is still full of antioxidants, so don’t sweat it.
Notes on the Dates: I used three for this recipe and it was just the right amount of sweet for me. If you want it to be sweeter, feel free to add more. If your dates are a bit dried out you can soak them in water for about twenty minutes to plump them up. This will make them smoother and creamier.

How long will this last in the fridge? Great recipe.....thanks again.

Hi Jo! Great question, we'll add this to the recipe card. We store it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, if it lasts that long. 🙂

I really fancy trying this version... Simple and original. Thank you for sharing! Though, I'm not sure I'll thank you after I eat the entire jar with a spoon!

Hahaha! That could be a problem. 🙂

Yum! I am a nut butter addict and eat it every single day in some shape or form. I love the idea of dipping apple slices in it. I bet it would be awesome dolloped on oatmeal with some banana too!
Linda Meyer says
That would be amazing, Melanie! Great idea! 🙂

Nothing beats homemade! And nothing beats chocolate nut butter! 🙂 So good! Pecan butter is my favorite to make at home. Pecans are so super buttery that you can make ultra smooth it in just a few minutes. Delish! Great recipe, Linda!
Linda Meyer says
Heck yes! Pecans make a great nut butter, that's on my list for next week. Thanks, Jenn!

You are right, it is so much easier and cheaper to make a lot of your own foods and this looks worth making for sure! Love how simple it is!
Linda Meyer says
I try to make as much as I can, but there are certain things that I will buy already made, like Kite Hill cheese and peanut butter. Thanks, Nicole!
Natalie | Feasting on Fruit says
OMG! I should not be trusted around this stuff. Homemade almond butter is just better. Plus I have yet to see a store-bought use dates to sweeten. This looks awesome! And wow 16 miles 😮 Good and much respect luck to you!
Linda Meyer says
Haha! I kind of went a bit overboard on this stuff, but hey, I'm burning a ton of calories! 🙂 You're absolutely right, Natalie, store bought butters don't use dates to sweeten, that's why I make my own. Thanks so much!
Trish says
Quick question: can I leave skin on the almonds or am I supposed to take it off? Looks yummy and I'm making this today!
Linda Meyer says
Hi Trish! Leave the skin on, the almonds are blended down to butter so it won't matter. Enjoy!
Christine @ Run Plant Based says
This looks amazing and would be perfect for school lunches, but I think I'll make some for myself. Thanks 🙂
Linda Meyer says
Thanks, Christine! You'll love it. 🙂

Homemade nut butters are always so fresh and rewarding, but yea...I'm usually to lazy and go through so much, buying jars is much cheaper than buying all those nuts!
Linda Meyer says
SO much better! If you buy in bulk it's actually cheaper to make your own almond butter, but yes, I'm also kind of lazy, unless I'm in the mood for a flavored nut butter.
