As it was the first week of a new semester, I was feeling particularly inspired. A semester full of new experiences waits ahead so I decided to get an extra jump-start this week! Yes, I have a second workout review for you guys. Mat Pilates. The first time I ever did this class was back home in Chicago at our health club. Unfortunately, the class was pain stakingly slow and easy. I didn’t break out a sweat at all and left feeling just the same as I had when I walked in.
I know I say this for most of the workouts I review, but I’ll say it again, the instructor is the most important part of the class (besides you, of course!). This is why I urge you to explore all of the instructors at your club/yoga studio, or wherever else, because every single one is different. I learned that once again yesterday during this class. Instantly I was dripping sweat and if you had the chance to look at me after the class, I looked like a drowned rat. Today my core is burning and my calves are cramping, but I feel better and stronger than ever. My friends, Pilates works!
The first 20 minutes of class were mostly devoted to core work. These were not your traditional crunches and mere planks. To stimulate your core, most of the exercise consisted of lying on the floor with your legs in the air, doing very small but extremely difficult movements. You wouldn’t think that moving your legs up and down or side to side could be that difficult, but trust me… it is. After doing tons of ab work, we did some stretches and finished off with some thigh and calf exercises! All in all, it was an absolutely fantastic workout! I highly recommend that all of you out there give it a try!
