Savory green energy balls instead of sweet green energy balls.
Are you all needing a change of pace? Sweet energy balls are popping up all over the web, so I thought I’d take us down a different path today. Because sometimes, you just want a little salt.
There’s another reason that I decided to take the road less traveled. Spirulina.
Have you ever had it?
Spirulina and I have been trying to become friends for a long time, but it hasn’t really worked out too well.
I tried adding it to my smoothies. Nope.
I tried adding it to my savory oatmeal. NOT!
I tried mixing it in water and chugging. No, just no.
And then I gave up.
But I really wanted to like it, because it has so many good things in it, and I like ingesting things that are good for me. However, I’m a food snob, so if it don’t taste good, mamma ain’t eating it!
If you’ve had spirulina you know what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, let me explain why I think it has a funky taste.
It’s algea. Blue green algea to be exact. In my opinion, it has a fishy taste, and it’s more pungent than seaweed—I love a good seaweed salad. That’s why it didn’t work for me in a smoothie or mixed in water. But as I said before, I really wanted us to be friends. Even if it was just a casual relationship. Seeing each other once a week or even once a month would be cool with me.
When Oriya Organics contacted me and asked me if I’d be interested in trying their SuperGreen Medley Powder I was like, why not? Maybe this time I’d actually like spirulina, it was worth trying, right?
When I got the powder—they sent me a container of their protein powder as well—I opened the jar and took a whiff. Ruh-roh! Although it didn’t smell as strong as the last brand that I bought, it still smelled a little fishy. The mix also contains chlorella, which has its own distinct smell. Because it contains both spirulina and chlorella, and the aroma wasn’t overpowering, I was feeling confident that this might be the brand that worked for me.
So I made a smoothie. Dates, banana, spinach, pineapple, hemp seeds, and a scoop of SuperGreen Medley Powder. I could taste the spirulina and chlorella, but they didn’t take over. I actually drank the entire glass and enjoyed it. That was huge, you guys!
As I was drinking that smoothie I started brainstorming about all of the other things that I could put this Super Green Medley in.
Savory energy balls
I ground a cup of raw almonds in the food processor (click here to learn how to make your own almond butter) until it turned to almond butter. Then I added hemp hearts, sea salt, black pepper, garlic powder, oregano, chipotle chili powder, apple cider vinegar, and a tablespoon of SuperGreen Medley Powder. Once the mixture turned into a big ball I took it out of the food processor and made the balls. I rolled them in finely chopped pumpkin seeds and then started eating.
The flavor of these savory green energy balls is slightly salty, smoky, a little spicy, and slightly earthy. The texture is chewy and crunchy, thanks to the pumpkin seeds.
They’re the perfect recovery snack after an intense workout. You’ll get protein and healthy fats from the hemp and pumpkin seeds, and a ton of antioxidants and vitamins from the spirulina, chlorella, wheat grass, and barley grass in the Super Green Medley.
In one scoop—approximately one tablespoon—of SuperGreen Medley Powder you’ll get 4 grams of protein plus the following:
Vitamin A 190% • Vitamin C 100% • Calcium 2% • Iron 35%
Vitamin E 80% • Vitamin K 630% • Riboflavin 15% • Niacin 15%
Vitamin B6 6% • Vitamin B12 70% • Pantothenic Acid 20%
Iodine 20% • Magnesium 4% • Manganese 10%
That’s insanely nutritional stuff right there my friends.
One of the reasons that I agreed to give Oriya Organics products a try was because their products are organic, non-GMO, vegan, and raw. They don’t use any fillers, artificial ingredients, or synthetics in their powders, and they use a third party laboratory to ensure purity. Those things are important to me, and I know that they’re important to you as well.
After years of trying to friend spirulina, it’s finally happened, thanks to SuperGreen Medley Powder. If you’ve been working on a friendship with spirulina too, then I suggest that you try this. If you already like spirulina, you’re going to love this product!
