Hey guys, it’s me, Alex! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been so busy with grad school, working, my new puppy, and decorating our (mine, Max’s and Hooper’s) new apartment in Chicago. Thank goodness I have an awesome partner to keep Veganosity going. Thanks mom!
It’s impossible to believe that it’s been one year since I became a vegan. I remember the moment I decided to take this journey, while watching animal rights videos on PETA, and deciding to keep it to myself for a week, because I didn’t want to seem like a flake if I changed my mind and went back to eating dairy and the occasional piece of fish or chicken. Thankfully, that never happened, because I realized two days in that this was the lifestyle for me, and I haven’t looked back, not even once.
One year vegan!
As I have reflected on this past year, it’s amazing how much becoming a vegan has changed my life. I’ve lost over 20lbs of study abroad and college weight. My energy level has gone up, and my athletic abilities have drastically improved. So, to all of those people who believe that vegans are weak and don’t get enough protein… hah! Not true! Over the past year I’ve finished my first 5k, two 10ks, a Warrior Dash, and a half marathon. I’ve also started lifting more and have made more gains in that area than I could have imagined. And, to top it all off, I’ve saved 200 animals + one more. And, my mom and I started this blog. One of my favorite parts of becoming a vegan!
Becoming vegan didn’t just change my eating habits and my health, but it also changed my outlook on life. No longer do I buy animal products, and I have a much greater respect for animals than I ever had before. Just ask my friends who think I’m absolutely crazy when I catch a spider to release it outside instead of killing it. It also pushed me to make the decision to adopt a shelter dog, which led my boyfriend and me to our little lady, Hooper. Who knows if we would’ve even considered adopting if I hadn’t just switched my eating habits. Right now, nothing in life could be better, and a lot of that, especially my health, is thanks to changing to this healthy, happy, and very green lifestyle.
Max and I also moved back to Chicago this year after we graduated from the University of Iowa. We moved into an adorable studio apartment that has a private terrace, a rooftop deck and garden, and it’s only two blocks to the lake! We have had a blast decorating it, and we furnished the entire space (all 560 square feet of it-hehe) using animal friendly products! I’ll definitely be posting some advice on how to decorate cruelty free once I find the time to put up some more pictures, and put the finishing touches on our little studio.
Me and my mom at the Chicago Run or Dye 5K. My first race ever!
My mom, dad, and brother after the Warrior Dash mud run and obstacle course. It was so much fun, and a great family bonding event!
Me and my mom at the Big 10 10K in Chicago. Go Hawkeyes! She didn’t drink the beer, she took it because it was free-haha!
Mom and me after the Chicago Monster Dash 10k. It was such a beautiful day!
Needless to say, I’ve been busy, in the best possible ways. And even though I don’t post very often these days, this blog is still a huge source of pride for me. I love that we can show people that eating healthy and animal free doesn’t mean that you have to give up taste or even your favorite foods, it just means reinventing and making those things even better. I’ll be showing up from time to time to share some of my favorite things with you, but until then, you’re in very good hands with Linda (my mom). Have a Happy, Healthy Thanksgiving!!
