Everyone and anyone who cares about animals needs to pay attention to this story and keep the momentum going.
On March 5th Virginia Congressman Jim Moran introduced H.R.4148, the “Humane Cosmetics Act,” a bill that could potentially end animal testing and the sale of animal tested products in the United States. As it’s written; animal testing, or the commissioning of animal testing, would be illegal in the U.S. And, prohibiting the selling or transportation of cosmetics that have been tested on animals (including any components, meaning individual ingredients within the whole product) would be illegal within three years of the passing of the bill.
So what does this mean for cosmetic companies that manufacture their products in China? It means that they better get hopping on opening up shop in the U.S., or finding another location that doesn’t require harming animals.
The crazy thing is, animal testing is not an adequate way to test the safety of products for humans. There are technologies that give a much more accurate result of human reactions to chemicals and plant based ingredients than the outdated and barbaric animal testing.
If technology is better at predicting how a product will react to humans, why wouldn’t cosmetic manufacturers use that method in the first place? The FDA doesn’t require animal testing, so it really comes down to two reasons. One, it’s cheaper to continue torturing animals than switching over to more effective and humane testing, or two, they don’t care about animals or their customers to change their methods.
Fortunately, there are hundreds of awesome cruelty-free cosmetic companies to choose from, but that doesn’t mean that those of us who have already found our favorite products should be complacent. This is a huge deal, one that would take the guess work out of purchasing all cosmetics in the United States. More importantly, it would save millions of innocent animals from a life of pain and torture.
We can’t be silent, it’s now or maybe never folks. Call and write your local legislatures and tell them to pass H.R. 4148. Sign the petition from the Humane Society, and keep fighting for those who can’t do it for themselves.
Together we can create an animal friendly world.
